Audio: when the built-in microphone is enough

What auto light correction really does to your image
Every budget camera here advertises this feature and it is worth understanding what happens when it engages.
The camera measures average scene brightness. Below a threshold it raises sensor gain, lengthens exposure time, and applies a digital brightness curve. Raising gain amplifies the signal and the noise together, so the image gets brighter and grainier at the same time. Lengthening exposure reduces noise but drops the effective frame rate and introduces motion blur, which is why a dim room often produces video that looks slightly smeared when you move.
The digital brightness curve then lifts shadows, which flattens contrast and produces the grey, washed-out appearance that reads as “cheap webcam” to viewers.
None of this is a defect. It is the only reasonable response to insufficient light. The fix is upstream: add light and the algorithm never engages. My 400 lux captures from the $12 camera looked better than my 40 lux captures from the $70 camera, which is the whole argument in one sentence.
Software control, and why it separates the tiers

Who should not buy a 1080p webcam at all
If you record content where image quality is the product rather than a supporting element, a mirrorless camera with a capture card produces results no webcam approaches, because the sensor is roughly thirty times larger. The cost is several hundred dollars and a more complicated setup, and for a serious channel it is the correct spend.
If you only take occasional calls on a modern laptop, the built-in camera in current machines is close enough to the cheap end of this list that an external unit adds clutter without adding much quality. Test yours in a bright room before spending anything.
And if your video looks bad right now, measure your lighting before you shop.
